#RememberRekia Campaign | April 2016

Picture

The #RememberRekia (also #DontPayDante and #SaveCSU) campaign demanded the firing of police officer Dante Servin, without a pension, and the immediate allocation of funds to save Chicago State University, slated to close that Fall.

A coalition of organizations from across Chicago, primarily led by young, Black queer women, demanded justice for Rekia Boyd, a young Black woman who was murdered by off-duty police officer Dante Servin in March of 2012. Using a variety of tactics, such as rallying at City Hall, visiting Governor Rauner with demands, leading teach-ins and train takeovers, and shutting down the intersection of Jackson and Lake Shore Drive during the NFL Draft Town, the campaign made critical connections between police officers killing Black people with impunity while Black community assets, such as CSU, were divested from.

Lead organizations included Assata's Daughters, Black Lives Matter Chicago, BYP100, and the fierce femmes of Fearless Leading by the Youth (FLY). For the People Artists Collective supported with banner making, creating memes and graphics, leading train takeovers, and participating in direct actions.
